Our cats come from a variety of sources and may range from indoor-only declawed cats to cats used to being outside to true feral (wild) cats that need to be "barn cats".  When we adopt small kittens, we insist that they go to homes where they will be indoor cats (since they tend to survive a lot longer indoors!).  Many of our adult cats, however, are used to going outside and it may not be possible to make them exclusively indoor cats.

We encourage all indoor-outdoor cats to be kept in at night, to reduce their chances of being eaten by predators such as coyotes.  We do not recommend de-clawing cats as there are good alternatives to controlling clawing behaviors and declawed cats tend to develop more behavior problems.

Note: Currently we have many cats in our care. You must call us to check on space for new cats before bringing them to the shelter.

Happy He is 2 years old short haired cat. Happy came to us not so happy. He wouldn’t even let us touch him. Now he enjoys are company.
Muffin Muffin's story is an interesting one. Apparently, she was fed mostly milk and tuna fish which caused her to become malnourished yet overweight! She is very gentle but still doesn't quite like to be held yet. She would do well in a quiet home without dogs and a family that could exercise her.
Charlotte This 13 year old female would prefer a home with no dogs but other furry felines would be fine.  She is declawed in the front.
Skyler Beautiful young black female cat who loves to talk!
Apollo Gentle giant, shy and mysterious!
Ebony Ebony is a black short haired sweetheart female about 1 who wants someone to love.
Chuck Chuck is a grey tabby who has a hard time with his back legs due to a trauma. He can still use litter box and is very loving, He just needs somewhere that he can feel calm and safe.
Matt Matt is a big boy who likes to play and needs some activity and fun

Feral Cats

We periodically are asked to help with feral (untamed and wild) cats.  We have funds by which to test these cats for FeLV and FIV (HIV-like cat viruses) and sterilize them.  We cannot provide these services, however, unless the trapping party or someone else agrees to take these cats and provide food and water for them.  If you have a need for an outdoor barn-type cat and can help, please let us know.  There is no adoption fee.  Feral cats must enter the IMHS program by appointment, as we do not accept feral cats except by pre-arrangement (we do not have the resources).  Any feral cat that tests positive for FeLV or FIV will be euthanized.  Any cat brought in as a feral cat, but is really just a scared stray will usually be placed into the adoption program if deemed adoptable.

All IMHS animal have been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated and sterilized. All litters of kittens are tested for feline leukemia virus and all adult cats are tested for Feline Leukemia virus and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.  Both of these viruses are related to the human AIDS virus, but are not a threat to people.   All newly adopted animals receive a certificate for a free examination and brief consultation with participating local veterinarians that is good for one week.  Persons interested in adopting animals should contact IMHS at 303-838-2668 or come to a Saturday adoption display at the IMHS office in Pine Junction.  Adoptions are based on suitability of the people and animals for each other as determined by IMHS volunteers and the adopting party.
