Welcome!
We provide CARE for every animal that enters our doors.
As an restricted intake animal shelter, Intermountain Humane Society welcomes every animal that comes through our door. The shelter receives animals of all types and with a variety of special needs. As our Mission states, we are committed to providing CARE that exceeds the generally accepted standards in the industry to each and every unique animal that enter the shelter. This includes but is not limited to:
- Providing quality care for lost and abandoned animals
- Providing a clean, comfortable, safe and healthy environment for animals
- Providing quality medical attention to sick and injured animals
- Providing enrichment programs to support not only physical needs but also mental and emotional support by utilizing volunteer, staff and other community resources
- Assisting member agencies in the investigation of cruelty, animal abuse and dangerous animal cases by providing shelter for the animals and providing medical or behavioral documentation on any ongoing case
- Complying with the Pet Animal Care Act (PACFA) standards
- Hiring and retaining compassionate and dedicated employees
- Considering and evaluating all possible alternatives, for each animal.
- Providing transfer and adoption services to other local animal sheltering organizations in our region who deal with animals at risk of euthanasia due to either high supply or low demand in their communities.
We are a community resource dedicated to strengthening the Human/Animal bond
As the primary animal care resource for West Jefferson county and Park County, we feel it is our responsibility to promote and strengthen the unique Human/Animal bond in our community. We embrace this philosophy by:
- Providing a centralized shelter to help families easily locate their lost pets
- Building alliances in the community to help deal with pet overpopulation and promote life saving transfers between animal welfare agencies
- Exemplifying the Humane treatment of animals
- Establishing an ongoing commitment to the animals and their families by providing post adoption support and a commitment to accept the return of any previously adopted animal
- Maintaining evaluation standards developed by Metro Denver Shelter Alliance (MDSA) to ensure safe and healthy animals are adopted into the community
- Complying with local and state laws and regulations that govern animal welfare and public safety
- Providing humane education
- Providing our staff with training and humane education materials that are shared with the community
- Supporting a progressive spay/neuter program
- Promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership within the community
We believe in adopting homeless animals into loving homes.
We make all effort to permanently place all potentially adoptable animals. We believe adoption is a serious, long term commitment. We want to ensure that each of our animals are adopted into the appropriate home. We promote this by:
- Evaluating the behavior and identifying special needs of each animal
- Screening potential adopters using established adoption guidelines
- Providing adoption counseling to help find the perfect pet for every family
- Matching individual animal behavior and energy levels to family lifestyles
We are committed to reuniting lost pets with their families
We make every effort possible to reunite lost animals with their families. We also provide educational tools and resources to help ensure pets do not become lost in the future, and, if they do, will be more easily reunited with their families. We are keeping families and pets together by:
- Providing microchip identification services
- Using microchip readers to scan and identify found pets
- Monitoring local resources to identify missing animals that may be in our care
- Working with local animal control services to identify found pets
- Microchipping all adopted animals
- Counseling owners about the proper methods of containment
- Discouraging owners from allowing cats to be outdoors
- Encouraging spaying and neutering
- Holding stray animals as legally required by State and Local law
We continually strive to educate our community on issues related to responsible pet ownership, animal welfare and humane education
We believe that education is the key to making our community a better place for both animals and people. We look for opportunities to help educate our community about animal welfare. We try to reach our community by;
- Providing animal behavior and animal health educational tools to adoptors
- Attending offsite educational and community events
- Being an animal welfare source to the media
- Keeping current with developing animal welfare issues
- Offering animal welfare presentations to school, church and other community groups
