Volunteers play a vital role within our organization. Without your support, we would not be able to assist the number of animals who need help in our community. Please review the positions available below and fill out our on-line Volunteer Application.

Available opportunities:

Cat Care Associate

Position Summary: Volunteers are needed between 8.30am – 11am on Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays to perform cleaning and animal care duties in the cat adoption room, to include feeding and socializing with the cats, cleaning cages, and sweeping and mopping the floor in preparation for opening the shelter at 11am.

Qualifications: Commitment to at least one regular shift weekly. Highly dependable. Ability to recognize and report signs and symptoms of illness in cats and to work safely around cats who may be shy, frightened or undersocialized. Demonstrated sense of compassion and respect for animals, and sensitivity to the psychological needs of animals who are suffering from stress or fright. This position is appropriate for volunteers aged 16 yrs and up, or mature children aged 12 – 15 yrs co-working with a parent on the same shift.

Dog Walkers

Position Summary: Volunteers are needed to walk dogs and/or exercise dogs in the IMHS fenced play yard for about a one-hour shift, times are flexible, between the hours of 8.30am – 6.30pm daily. We typically maintain a population of 5 – 9 adult dogs in our care and each dog needs to go out for a brisk 15 – 30 minute walk, several times daily.

Qualifications: Commitment to a minimum of one regular shift weekly. Highly dependable. Ability to safely and humanely control dogs of varying activity levels on leash. Basic dog-handling skills and ability to exercise good judgment when dealing with shelter dogs. Ability to recognize and report signs and symptoms of illness in dogs and to work safely around dogs who may be shy, frightened or undersocialized. Demonstrated sense of compassion and respect for animals, and sensitivity to the psychological needs of animals who are suffering from stress or fright. This position is open to volunteers aged 16 yrs and up, or mature children aged 9 – 15 yrs co-working with a parent on the same shift.

Associate Groomer

Position Summary: Volunteer groomers are needed to provide grooming care for kittens, cats and/or puppies and dogs as directed, to include basic grooming duties such as brush-outs, clipper trims, nail trims, and bathing or dipping animals. Shift times are flexible and typically 1 – 2 hours in duration between the hours of 9am – 3.30pm.

Qualifications: Commitment to one shift each week, days and times are flexible depending on volunteer availability. Demonstrated ability to handle shelter animals with compassion, respect, and gentleness. Ability to recognize and report signs and symptoms of illness in animals. Knowledge of canine and feline body language and the ability to recognize signs of agitation or aggression in animals a must. Basic animal handling skills and the ability to follow directions closely. This position is open to mature volunteers aged 16 yrs and up, or mature children aged 9 – 15 yrs may perform brush-outs on shelter animals with parental consent and as directed by a shelter Supervisor.

Canine Enrichment Associate

Position Summary: Flexible shift hours, anytime between the hours of 9am - 3pm, any week day. The Canine Enrichment Associate focuses on elevating the quality of life for shelter dogs by helping to develop and implement our enrichment program. Duties include researching special "clever" toys designed to enhance the lives of dogs and working with shelter management team to acquire donated toys; coordinating and overseeing doggie playgroups among resident shelter dogs, interacting one-on-one with dogs off-leash in the IMHS play yard by playing fetch, brushing dogs, and just focusing on giving each dog love and individual attention. This volunteer will log notes on individual dogs to help us better represent their unique personalities to adopters.

Qualifications: Commitment to a minimum one-hour shift each week. Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment. Willingness to research appropriate canine enrichment toys and actively seek donations of toys suitable for shelter dogs a plus. Ability to safely and humanely work with dogs of varying activity and excitement levels both on-leash and in a controlled off-leash play yard. Ability to recognize and report signs and symptoms of illness in dogs. Basic knowledge of canine body language and demonstrated sense of compassion and respect for animals. Sensitive to the psychological needs of animals who are suffering from stress or fright. This position is open to volunteers aged 16 yrs and up, or mature children aged 13 – 15yrs as allowed with parental consent and at the direction of a shelter Supervisor. Youth volunteers may be instrumental in preparing dog treats, and passing out treats and toys to shelter dogs.

Feline Enrichment Associate

Position Summary: Flexible shift hours, anytime between the hours of 9am - 3pm, any week day. The Feline Enrichment Associate focuses on elevating the quality of life of shelter cats by helping to develop and implement our enrichment program. Duties include researching special "clever" toys designed to enhance the lives of cats and working with the shelter management team to acquire donated toys; passing out catnip, toys and kitty treats to shelter cats as directed, interacting one-on-one with shelter felines in the IMHS cages or approved indoor and/or outdoor enclosed play areas; brushing cats, and focusing on giving each cat/kitten love, socialization and individual attention. This volunteer will log notes on individual cats to enhance our understanding of the individual felines in our care.

Qualifications: Commitment to a minimum one-hour shift each week. Willingness to research and/or make appropriate feline enrichment toys and actively seek donations of toys suitable for shelter cats a plus. Ability to safely and humanely work with cats with varying levels of activity, socialization, and temperament. Ability to recognize and report signs and symptoms of illness in cats. Basic knowledge of feline body language and demonstrated sense of compassion and respect for animals. Sensitive to the psychological needs of animals who are suffering from stress or fright. This position is open to volunteers aged 14 yrs and up, or mature youth aged 9 – 13yrs as allowed with parental consent and at the direction of a shelter Supervisor. Youth volunteers may be instrumental in brushing shelter cats, preparing kitty treats, and passing out treats, catnip and toys to shelter cats.

Animal Care Associate, A.M. shift

Position Summary: Volunteers sought to work a 3-hour shift between 7-10am or 8 – 11am, helping with general shelter cleaning and animal care duties to prep the shelter for opening. Duties may include taking dogs to the outdoor runs/play yard, feeding, medicating animals as directed, assisting with laundry and dishes, wiping down the tarps over the kennel and cat room cages, sweeping/mopping, restocking shelter supplies, acting as support staff in cleaning of the kennel and/or cat adoption areas. The Animal Care Associate will be cross-trained on duties in both kennel and cat adoption areas, and will float between duties in both areas as need, providing additional support to shelter staff. We have openings in this position most days of the week!

Qualifications: Commitment of one 2 – 3 hour shift each week. Dependable, efficient worker needed, with the ability to multi-task. Ability to recognize and report signs and symptoms of illness in dogs and cats, once trained, and to work safely around animals who may be shy, frightened or undersocialized. Ability to safely and humanely control dogs weighing up to 200lbs, on-leash. Demonstrated sense of compassion and respect for animals, and sensitivity to the psychological needs of animals who are suffering from stress or fright. This position is appropriate for volunteers aged 16 yrs and up, or some duties may be assigned to mature youth at the discretion of Shelter Manager.

Animal Care Associate, P.M. shift

***New position!*** URGENT NEED TO FILL
Position Summary: The ACA for the pm shift is needed in the afternoon for a 2-hour shift, ranging between 3pm - 5.30pm. Duties may generally include bringing dogs in from the outdoor kennels, feeding, passing out treats, scooping litter pans, assisting with laundry and dishes, medicating as directed, spot cleaning of cages, and scooping the outdoor runs. This volunteer position is designed to provide afternoon support to the shelter staff by performing animal care duties in preparation for closing the shelter.

Qualifications: Commitment of one 2-hour shift each week. Dependable, efficient worker needed, with the ability to multi-task. Ability to recognize and report signs and symptoms of illness in dogs and cats, once trained, and to work safely around animals who may be shy, frightened or undersocialized. Ability to safely and humanely control dogs weighing up to 200lbs, on-leash. Demonstrated sense of compassion and respect for animals. This position is appropriate for mature volunteers aged 13 yrs and up, or youth 9 yrs and up volunteering with a parent on the same assignment.

Offsite Animal Care Associate

***New position!*** URGENT NEED TO FILL
Position Summary: Flexible hours. Shifts will typically last about 1 -2 hours in duration, and duties may be performed between 9am - 8pm when offsite stores are open. Duties to include cleaning and animal care at offsite locations where IMHS cats reside until adopted, at the direction of IMHS management and directly supervised by offsite partner staff; communication with the IMHS Shelter Manager about animal welfare issues and alerting to when animals are adopted; transport of money/adoption paperwork and animals, as needed, to/from IMHS and offsite location. May assist with promoting animals at special offsite adoption events as directed.

Qualifications: Commitment of minimum of one weekly shift required. Highly reliable volunteer needed to work independently and exercise good judgment when dealing with animals and people. Good communication skills and the ability to represent IMHS in a courteous and professional manner at all time when working offsite. Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of illness in cats and promptly report concerns to IMHS Shelter Manager. Good animal-handling skills and the ability to safely and humanely handle cats of various socialization and activity levels. Willingness to drive to/from IMHS shelter and assigned offsite location weekly to transport animals and paperwork as needed.

Office Associate

***New position!***
Position Summary: Volunteers needed to assist with a variety of administrative duties in the shelter, a minimum of once/weekly. Shift times are somewhat flexible, typically 1 ½ - 3 hours in duration between 10am – 3pm, any day of the week. Duties may include file maintenance, helping photograph shelter animals and upload pictures to the web site, data entry, answering phones, processing adoption paperwork, assisting shelter visitors, and administrative duties related to the IMHS foster and volunteer programs.

Qualifications: Commitment to one regularly assigned shift per week. Excellent attention to detail and good computer and data entry skills. Good communication, good judgment, a sense of professional maturity, and ability to represent IMHS in a courteous and professional manner when dealing with clients and other volunteers. Demonstrated sense of compassion and respect for animals, and commitment to the objectives of the organization. This position is appropriate for mature volunteers aged 17 yrs and up who meet all qualifications of the job.

Marketing Associate

Position Summary: Volunteer needed to help market IMHS programs and services. Flexible schedule based on the availability of the volunteer and the needs of the organization. The Marketing Associate is instrumental in creating and implementing IMHS marketing plans, seeking free and highly inexpensive yet effective avenues to promote the organization. Grassroots marketing to include creating and posting IMHS advertisement signs at local businesses and switching out signs as necessary, expanding numbers of business-partners offering discounts to IMHS members, recruiting volunteers to pass out IMHS fliers and marketing materials as directed to promote special events, adoption campaigns, fundraisers, etc. Assist as able with graphic and computer design help, and/or web site development.

Qualifications: Commitment to a minimum of one 2-hour shift per month. Mature, outgoing, professional personality and appropriate level of assertiveness in approaching potential business IMHS partners. Willingness to cultivate support for IMHS in the community, and commitment to the mission and objectives of the organization. Excellent communication skills; the ability to work with software systems to design marketing materials. This position is appropriate for mature volunteers aged 17 yrs and up with the skill set needed to perform the job.

Community Outreach Associate

Position Summary: Volunteers sought to staff the IMHS booth at community events and tables, solicit donations, pass out approved fliers and brochures, and increase the public’s awareness of IMHS programs and services.

Qualifications: Commitment flexible, depending on the needs of the organization. Earnest desire to help homeless animals and commitment to IMHS’s mission. Terrific service opportunity for youth volunteers.

Retail Associate, Second Chance Thrift Shop

Position Summary: Volunteers sought to assist with sales and merchandising in the IMHS Second Chance Thrift Shop. Duties may include cleaning donated items, sorting and displaying items for sale; staffing the cash register; promoting IMHS programs, services, and adoptable animals; light animal care duties for resident Shop cats available for adoption.

Qualifications: Commitment to a minimum of one shift each week, shift times will typically be assigned between 9.30am – 6pm. Good customer service skills, dependability, and the desire to promote the mission and objectives of IMHS sought. Join our thrift shop “family”!
